EVEAVA / DJ / Interview

Interview on Thursday, November 9th
Location: Wynwood Block

When did you start DJing?

I had quit bartending and needed money. My friend Zach was doing PR for Forbes and they organized an event for an interior design company during Basel 2015. He needed to hire a DJ for the event and I told him I would do it. He laughed and thought I was crazy, but still let me do it. My roommate had cdjs'/mixer, so I learned the basics in a week. A lot of my friends are DJs so it was easy for me to jump in. I just gradually started taking it more seriously.

What else do you do in the music industry?

I do graphic design stuff and I am also a filmmaker.  I actually made a film about the gentrification of Wynwood called Right to Wynwood

It’s funny that now I’m DJing at Antidote, one of the cool upscale stores here. Right now I am working on a film which brings in both of my passions, it is about the intersection of noise, hip-hop and dance music in Miami.

Who inspires you?

Artists and musicians! I would say a good example would be Nicolas Jaar. He brings together art and music in an elegant way. I am very inspired by his creativity and the way he constantly redefines himself.

Your music icon?

Nicolas Jaar is one of my favorite producers alongside Roman Flugel and Four Tet. My favorite band is Radiohead.

What song are you listening to on repeat right now?

It’s funny! I recently found Nicolas Jaar’s Inés in a CDJ at my house. I don’t know who put it there. Jaar made Inés as a tribute to his mother and it’s a beautiful album that he released not long before Space is only Noise. I’ve been listening to the album on repeat in my car for about two weeks now. One track that I really like is called “Her String”.

What is the biggest gig you have ever played?

The biggest one I have played is when I closed for Nicola Cruz at Bardot in December last year. He is an amazing DJ/Producer from Ecuador. It was my first time closing for someone and I was very nervous. I was kind of drunk when they told me I had to go plug in my usb. I looked out at the room and it was so packed, I got up to the DJ booth and the adrenaline just sobered me up and I played to a full room until 5:45 am. It’s been my favorite set so far.

What is your favorite song to play?

Lately, I have been playing this track called Le Tchadien Reprise. Every time I play it people get really happy. I like to feel the energy changing in the room.

Do you have a studio in your house?

Everyone who has ever lived in my house for some reason has always been a DJ or has liked music, so we have speakers and equipment for sure. Whenever we have parties or people come over someone is always spinning.

What is your favorite concert you have ever been to?

Definitely Darkside. It’s funny how obsessed I am with Nicolas Jaar!

Darkside is Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington. They made an album and an EP together and they performed at Mana in Wynwood a couple of years ago. They had a Pink Floyd type prism made with a circular mirror behind them. It was a beautiful night.

What is your favorite music festival?

I just performed at III Points Festival here. My favorite music festival is definitely Primavera Sound in Barcelona, very well curated and well organized.

How do you get the word out about your music?

Mostly Instagram! I like to put pictures of my cats, too. My DJ name actually comes from both of my cats names, Eve and Ava.

Do you think being a woman has helped or hurt your career as a DJ?

To be honest female DJ’s are very welcome in the industry, there aren’t a lot of us, but I haven’t felt like I have been treated differently because I am a woman.

What is your favorite place you have ever traveled?

Either Berlin or Barcelona.

What is your guilty pleasure?

I think wine. I could always have a glass of Sauvignon Blanc.

Do you have any advice for aspiring DJ’s starting out?

Practice mixing different types of music and be authentic. Look for the tracks that move you and try to notice why that happens. That’ll help you find your own style.

Last but not least, favorite Antidote pieces?

I love the Elsa pants, Chrissie top, Banded Bangles, Dune ring all together with the Jal wedges. All black everything!
